Chief Operating Officer for startup of new business-to-business (b-2-b) cultural and performing arts travel-related services company.

 

Built a photo scanning operation to create high-quality photos for web presentation; Negotiated a contract with National Geographic to scan photos, saving $250K in the first year of operation; Designed and built a cultural and performing arts database as basis for generating customized travel packages; Recruited web-experienced staff to meet high currency product demand; Created a web-based production system, self-reporting system for museum updates, customized feed; Developed administrative strategy for virtual corporation including automated attendant services and planned virtual private network; identified data extraction software solutions to expedite web data aggregation.

Interim President for startup of new media publishing company.

 

Built new circulation plan that resulted in 50% increase in subscription; Reorganized sales team and developed plan for more aggressive performance-based sales compensation plan; Created and implemented restructuring plan that cut costs 20% and reduced outstanding debt by 50%; Developed business plan for health website that resulted in joint venture with Henry Schein, largest distributor of medical products in the US.

Senior Vice President - Content Development Division       

 

P&L  for content/editorial creation, strategic planning and product management for 90+ database products, product launching of  online and Web-based products for the Consumer, Corporate and Library Markets; Management of  senior group with overall management/supervision of total staff of 350+ employees. Budget $24+ million.  

 

Successfully launched 3 new database products on the World Wide Web: Cognito! Wired Homework; news alerting service ‘Industry Express’; advertising-supported MarketPlace Select; Prototyped new image production system utilizing new automated indexing technologies which would compress 19 processes/systems to 5, improve product delivery to  24-48 hours from 10 days and improve profits by $2-3 million in FY96; Created the core editorial content for first product specifically designed for the UK market; Launched first foreign language product (Spanish language) as new revenue stream; Migrated all production from three proprietary systems (Wang, DEC, IBM) to client server technology, eliminating costly legacy hardware/software.

 

Vice President and Publisher - Database Production 

 

P&L for strategic planning/management/supervision of all aspects of data creation and editorial content, applications development, computer operations and production of more than 40 products including InfoTrac, Health Reference Center, Computer Database, Wards/ Company Intelligence, PROMT, Trade and Industry and electronic full text and images - with a total staff of 150+.  Budget $11+ million.

 

Developed remote indexing operation at 1/3 operating cost of the U.S.-based facility; Developed an organization structure to support 15-20% growth annually; expanded capacity to support the introduction of two product lines annually; Directed the activities of copyrights and licensing group in securing new contracts with publishers that resulted in approximate savings of some $200K royalties payout while increasing revenue growth 15%; Executed multi-year data conversion contracts resulting in 20% cost reduction; Participated in the design and production of several new and spin-off products including TOM, Health Reference Center, Magazine Index Plus and the redesign of Trade and Industry and Wards print directories.

  

Vice President, Editorial - Editorial Department

 

P&L for creation, editorial content and production of legal, general periodical, newspaper and business database products in print, microfilm, online and CD-ROM media.  Managed staff growth from 45 to 100+.  Budget growth from $1 - 7 million.

 

Launched first rights campaign to produce two microfilm collection products and first library CD-ROM product InfoTrac; Built staff, created standardized contracts and telephone campaign resulting in successful negotiations of 85% of contracts for the general periodicals collections and 65% for the business collections in the first year.  Consolidated three discrete and remote business operations (Boston, Northbrook, Louisville) into the California operations with no significant loss of production time; Facilitated staff growth from 45 to more than 100 to support rapid revenue growth and product expansion; Launched new online directory database Company Intelligence combining company and electronic full text articles with a unique retrieval scheme; Directed the design of workflow systems for indexing, abstracting, editing and creating electronic full text; Created and implemented editorial policies for specific product lines; coordinated development of product specific controlled vocabularies;

Directed the movement and integration of 3 computer systems into the Wang minicomputer system;

Built a computer operations staff to support product and production growth; Negotiated multi-year mainframe computer service contract to meet projected growth over a four year period; Developed specialized training programs to improve product quality; created first company performance appraisal system and job standards to raise productivity and database currency; Repositioned National Newspaper Index and Computer Database as high quality, high currency products; changes resulted in significant revenue growth curves from ‘83-89.

P&L for management/supervision of all aspects of online data capturing/production - Advertising, Middle East, Key Issues Tracking, Information Bank, Times Full-Text  and Boston Globe databases - with total staff of 100+.  Budget $1+ million.

 

Increased data entry productivity by 50%; copy editor productivity by 30%; Improved online currency levels from ten days to 48-72 hours from publication date on database product lines, which enabled sales staff to achieve significant sales and usage gains; Implemented performance appraisal system which improved supervisor-employee relations and provided greater training efficiency and promotability of staff - 22% in three years; Developed an effective customer service program supporting Marketing/Editorial groups.
