Unlimited Priorities Upgrades Distance Learning Site for Earlham School of Religion

Cape Coral, FL (August 4, 2011) – Unlimited Priorities® has developed a new, more robust web site to support a key primary source collection at the Earlham School of Religion (ESR). The project involved updates for a UNIX/LINUX server, improvements to the search engine for proximity ranges, a reload of data to support updated versions of eXist and Lucene, and software updates for Tomcat, Java, and Saxon XSLT processing.

ESR’s Digital Quaker Collection contains full text and page images of over 500 individual Quaker works from the 17th and 18th centuries. Built about 8 years ago, the site gives distance learners access to the same type of quality information as students have on campus at the Lilly Library. The proprietary software developed for ESR provides multiple search functions and an interface for viewing pages.

In 2011, Jay Marshall, Dean of ESR, who had the original vision for the digital library, turned once again to the experts at Unlimited Priorities to do some much-needed maintenance. In addition to updating the search engine, they also wanted to upgrade the server environment.

Tim Seid, ESR’s Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of New Testament Studies, is the school’s liaison for distance learning. Besides his education in theology, he also has a technology avocation. Assoc. Dean Seid said: “Since Joe Paulsen and Iris Hanney were instrumental in building the initial site, including the content conversion, we naturally wanted them to handle this upgrade to the primary source repository. We knew we could count on Unlimited Priorities to execute the project within our budgetary framework and with a high level of expertise.”

Iris Hanney, founder and President of Unlimited Priorities replied: “We designed the website, the environment in which it would reside, developed the XML, and coordinated the imaging and conversion of this rare full-text material. The Archival Initiatives Division of Unlimited Priorities is geared towards the appropriate archiving and management of rare collections. As we remain on the cutting edge of technology we applaud the team at Earlham for recognizing the need for an overhaul so the site would continue to operate well into the future. It is a pleasure having long-standing customers to grow with.”

Earlham School of Religion is a Christian graduate school located in Richmond, Indiana.

Unlimited Priorities Donates Furniture to Xavier University of Louisiana Library

Locally Purchased Items Support New Orleans Economy

Cape Coral, FL (June 16, 2011)Unlimited Priorities® has announced that it will donate the furniture from its exhibit booth at the 2011 American Library Association Annual Conference to the Library Resource Center of Xavier University of Louisiana.

Xavier University was founded as a high school in 1915 by St. Katharine Drexel of Philadelphia. The four-year college program was added in 1925. Today, Xavier retains its distinction as the only historically Black Catholic University in the United States.

The booth furnishings to be donated were purchased locally at Furniture Mart and include a black pleather sofa, two black pleather armchairs, a coffee table and two end tables. The conference exhibit double-booth is a shared enterprise with Accessible Archives, Inc.©, an Unlimited Priorities client.

Iris L. Hanney, president of Unlimited Priorities, explained the reasons behind the donation decision: “We have participated in many library conferences over the years, and finally have reached a point where in good conscience we cannot simply rent furniture for thousands of dollars, only to return it when the exhibits close. Instead, we want to be good stewards and donate the furniture to a deserving institution. Therefore, we are extremely pleased to be able to place this furniture in the Library Resource Center at Xavier University where we are certain it will be well used.”

Robert Skinner, University Librarian, responded: “In these hard economic times, it’s unusual to see a vendor make an investment in a client like Unlimited Priorities has done with this furniture. We’re pleased and proud to have been chosen for this donation, and think it a very appropriate gift for a library. After all, no matter how digital a library becomes, it still has to have comfortable furniture for students to sit in.”

Conference attendees may visit Unlimited Priorities at booth #2225 — listed under Accessible Archives — in the exhibits area at the ALA 2011 Annual Conference in New Orleans. Unlimited Priorities is the exclusive sales and marketing agent for Accessible Archives.

Unlimited Priorities Corporation Assists With Ship Index Linking Project

Cape Coral, FL (June 14, 2011)Accessible Archives, Inc.©, an electronic publisher of primary source historical databases, has signed an agreement with ShipIndex.org to create links between their databases. The links will take users directly from a reference in ShipIndex.org to a newspaper article from Accessible Archives. Thousands of links are now available for ShipIndex.org subscription customers. Accessible Archives customers will see the full text with one click.

Painstaking research was involved, but project participants enlisted the help of licensing and technology experts at Unlimited Priorities®, the exclusive sales and marketing agent for Accessible Archives.

Iris Hanney, Unlimited Priorities President said: “We love working with entrepreneurial companies to make their content more discoverable. In this case, we focused on maritime material from the Civil War era because of its 150th anniversary, but that is just the first step.”

We love working with entrepreneurial companies to make their content more discoverable. –Iris Hanney

Peter McCracken, co-creator of ShipIndex.org, responded: “I enjoyed working with Accessible Archives and Unlimited Priorities. Both were extremely helpful in offering resources to test the concept and providing the necessary technology to create links.” McCracken added; “As an example of what I found in Accessible Archives, there was a newspaper report written by the captain of the Waterloo — a first-hand account of how the ship was rammed and sunk by a whale.”

Genealogists and academics will want to mine ShipIndex.org to learn more about a specific vessel on which an individual traveled, served, or worked.

Sail by the waves of attendees at the American Library Association Conference in New Orleans next week and visit Booths 2225 (Accessible Archives/Unlimited Priorities) and 3818 (Ship Index).
